It’s that time of year again! The 2007 Fall Community Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, September 15th. Now is the time to start cleaning up and preparing for the sale. This is an archive article from the Town of Gilbert, originally sent in September, 2004.
As many of you know, the Town of Gilbert is under a Stage I Water Alert. The predictions are for our 9 year drought to continue and possibly worsen. We hope these predictions are wrong but we must be prepared for the future which could include the declaration of Stage 2 or Stage 3 drought status. Fines for water wasting may be issued in Stage 2; overseeding is prohibited and fines imposed in Stage 3. The message is clear: we all must make water conservation a part of our lifestyle now and in the future.
Enclosed is information on overseeding turf areas and the benefits of skipping this procedure. While Bermuda typically goes dormant in the cold months, it is possible to extend the length of its growing season and lush green appearance well into winter. The University of Arizona turf specialists recommend multiple applications of iron (2-4 oz of actual iron per 1000 square feet). Apply the first application about October 1, the next 10 days later and follow up again after another 10 days. Do not apply nitrogen fertilizers. Remember that even dormant Bermuda needs ½ inch of water per month during the winter.
