Turf areas that are used for recreation by adults, children and pets are welcome havens in our desert environment.  Even low-water use landscapes may include a practical area of turf that helps cool the house and provide a relaxing place to unwind.

But some turf areas aren’t used and could be better utilized by converting into a colorful landscape full of water-efficient plants.  This month’s article addresses the decision whether or not to convert turf into Xeriscape, the benefits, and how to do it.

This is an archive article from the Town of Gilbert, originally sent in August, 2005. Ahhh…the smell of rain. Besides making the air smell fresh, it always makes plants look greener and brighter. Rainwater is a clean, salt-free source of water that contains many beneficial ingredients for plants. Rain can contain sulfur, potash, several other minerals and even microorganisms, all of which provide a boost to plant growth. Plus all this rain water is FREE!! If we receive enough rain, automatic irrigation and sprinkler cycles can be postponed for a few days or longer.

The attached article will give you tips on turning irrigation controllers off and on, and also includes toll-free numbers to common manufacturers which can be contacted for assistance. In addition, there are some surprising statistics regarding automatic systems vs. manual watering.
